Science Station 10: The Spring

Below the Earth's surface, sometimes just inches, sometimes miles, lies 97 percent of our freshwater. This water may have come from the last rainfall, or it could have been hidden deep in the earth for a million years.

There are many threats to this spring. Logging and road construction, without the proper erosion control, may cause this spring to become choked with sediment. Clearing vegetation from around the spring increases the sediment and can result in the temperature of the water going up to the point where the creatures it supports can no longer live there.
