The Quarries
It is believed that the building stones for the Lonesome Cabin’s foundation and chimney were carved from the limestone hillside across the creek. The remaining terraces of this “Pioneer Quarry” can be seen upon closer inspection of the limestone outcropping on the other side of Beaverdam Creek. Several hundred yards downstream, an additional quarry and its lime kilns were in operation for many years.

Currently, the other side of the hill before you is being quarried by Rogers Group Inc. Crushed stone gravels from the Rogers Group Gum Branch Quarry underlie the roads and parking lots at Lonesome Historic Site. These quarries have historically provided building stone, crushed rock products, fertilizers, cement products, and gainful employment to the local Burns economy.
